Applications (AU)

AU Application

Applications are CLOSED.

If your character comes from a canon source but some things have been changed about their history, this is the application you should fill out.

**This includes genderbends, if they are well-written and thoughtful.**

When in doubt as to whether or not a character or fandom can be applied for, consider the following.
Does your character have any history?
Does your character have a definable personality?

If your answer is no to either of these questions then perhaps you should consider applying as an original character instead. If you have any doubts as to whether or not something can be applied for, please direct an inquiry to our FA(W)Q page.

Applications are open the 1st through 7th of the month. Applications are accepted within a few days of when they are posted, please do not bring late application reviews to the mod's attention unless it has been over a week.

We will only review two apps per person per round, so please refrain from posting more. A mingle log of characters waking up in the morgue will be linked with acceptances and will be optional.

KEEP IN MIND

・Before you begin, please read through the Rules, F.A.(W).Q., and the General Information posts.
・Please also check the Taken Characters and Reservations pages.
・AU applications are judged far more harshly than canon ones. Be sure that your AU is still recognizable as the character you have created an AU for.
・Any questions you may have regarding the application process or character choice before you submit you application please direct them to the FA(W)Q page. This will speed the review process.
・Please be as complete as possible. Fill out all areas. This helps the mods to see your grasp of your character and speeds approval. If the minimum app requirements are not met, it will mean an automatic rejection.
・Please use the form provided when submitting your application. Applications in any other formats will need to be redone and resubmitted before they can be reviewed.
・Please try to use appropriate grammar, spelling, and common English syntax. Apps need not be academic in tone, but they should be easily readable. We do review writing proficiency, so please proof-read your applications.
・The mods of Abax consider quality over quantity when reading applications, however no one will reject you for the occasional spelling or grammar mistake. But a large amount of mistakes that could have been corrected in a proofreading will be brought up.
・Should you need assistance with samples, we offer a test drive community at [community profile] abaxopoly, any posts or threads made to this community are welcome to be used as samples.
Moderators reserve the right to ask for revisions on applications. You are allotted 72 hours to submit your revisions before your application is forfeit.
PLEASE NOTE: When writing a first person sample PLEASE try to give us something more than simply 'waking up in the morgue' first post samples. While we do not forbid them, we prefer to encourage other methods of supplying voice. These posts can often be hard to judge, as they can fall under a 'generic' feeling or voice to them. Should you choose to use this as your sample please make sure it exemplifies something about the characters personality, or more than likely we will ask you for revisions. Examples of what we would prefer in place of these first person samples are links to other threads, first person samples made out of Abax (in their home verse, or otherwise), or samples of cases where the character has been situated in Abax for some time.

An Application Guide can be found here with more detailed information on what we are looking for!

Please direct any questions about the game or apps to our FAQ page.

Characters in game, be advised, we now have a Peer Review page for applications.

personality: Dru is mad. There’s no getting around that, even if it isn’t entirely cut and dried. Drusilla was sired by Angelus after months of relentless pursuit and torture. An ensouled Angel once remarked that she was the “worst” thing he created as a vampire, so we can only guess what a lot of this torture included. (In fact, she often displays what is known as ‘dissociative behaviour’, which is common in children who have suffered through traumatic experiences. She retreats into a world of her own when things become difficult or upsetting and lavishes a great deal of affection on her beloved dolls.) We do know that he murdered her family, and, when she fled to a convent in search of sanctuary, forced her to watch as he massacred the nuns and slept with his partner Darla. Her grip on reality – which, thanks to her gift of sight, had always been tentative at best – simply snapped.

Because her visions – and, eventually, Angelus – snatched away her childhood, the vampiric Drusilla has many childlike attributes. She collects dolls and likes ‘cute’ things such as puppies and kittens, though she has no concept of how to care for her pets properly and feels no remorse when confronted with their death. Like (almost) all of the Buffyverse vampires, she has no soul and is therefore inherently evil. She’ll sweetly sing nursery rhymes while torturing somebody and is generally at her happiest when a lovely bit of mass destruction is going on around her. Her language – often rather innocent, peppered with nonsense words, songs and nursery rhymes – masks her true wickedness and her bloodthirsty nature.

Prior to being discovered by Angelus, Drusilla was a pure and virtuous Catholic (with a potential for sainthood, as a matter-of-fact). However, her desire to enter a convent was motivated by her desire to cleanse herself as much as by her piety. She considered her visions of the future to be wicked – something Angelus preyed on during his pursuit, whispering that she was a child of the devil and that the devil himself had given her those gifts – and believed that they made her an “evil thing”. Her feverish religious devotion was a way of making up for that. These days, however, she revels in her wickedness. As far as she is concerned, she was not only born to be evil, but crafted to be evil by Angelus, the person she loves most in the world. During his systematic and torturous creation of Drusilla, he made her unfailingly loyal and completely devoted to him.

(For this reason, she has a great deal of hate for those who took Angelus away from her and keep him imprisoned behind Angel’s soul and conscience. But she is also drawn to the bits of Angel that are familiar and won’t let anyone kill him in the hope that her father will be returned to her one day.)

She loves the rest of her ersatz family – the vampire family that replaced the human family that Angelus murdered – almost as much. Although Angelus comes first, she is still loyal to and affectionate towards her ‘grandmother’ Darla and her “darling deadly boy” Spike. Vampires without souls are capable of love and Drusilla is very good example of that, but her idea of love tends to be as dangerous and twisted as she is. She can think of nothing better than bloody slaughter to celebrate it and has no real concept of fidelity. Furthermore, Drusilla is the sort of person who needs somebody to take care of her. Although she is cunning, vicious and, despite her madness, intelligent enough to survive on her own, she doesn’t particularly want to. She puts a great deal of faith in family – she refuses to lose another one - and isn't entirely comfortable on her own. As far as she is concerned, that isn’t the way things are supposed to work.

Although she hasn’t discovered it yet, the chip will, obviously and understandably, have a big effect on Drusilla. She’ll need someone to look after her more than ever. She’ll have difficultly feeding, particularly finding (and accepting) alternative sources of blood. Curbing her natural thirst for blood – something she has gleefully indulged for centuries – won’t be easy, so her first few days with the chip will be filled with pain. Although the frequency of the shocks will eventually decline as she gets used to what is happening, they will never disappear entirely. Like an injured child, she’ll need to be soothed and comforted. Most importantly, the chip is not the same as a soul. It won’t stop her from wanting to kill and, like Spike, collaborations with the likes of Buffy or Angel will only occur if they are to her advantage. Getting rid of the chip will be her top priority.

abilities/powers: Drusilla has the sight, and, as well as being able to see visions of the future, she has a variety of other handy psychic abilities. In particular, she has a knack for hypnosis and telepathy, which is seen when she mesmerises Kendra and when she convinces Rupert Giles that she is his deceased lover. Her visions, however, are not particularly selective. She can’t choose what she sees or when and often finds them rather distressing. Occasionally her cryptic comments can’t be interpreted without the benefit of hindsight. (When they are interpreted, people often misunderstand her or read her comments in a way other than the one that was intended. She has a way of speaking that is all her own and some people require a translator – usually someone who knows her well enough to have adapted to her peculiarities – to understand her.)

She also has the standard strengths of a Buffyverse vampire. She’s immortal – unless she’s exposed to sunlight or staked in the chest, that is – and has physical strength far beyond the human norm, as well as longevity and the ability to recover quickly from most injuries. Her weaknesses including holy water, the aforementioned sunlight and the inability to enter a dwelling without an invitation. After being captured by the Initiative, she was fitted with a microchip that prevented violence – and, unfortunately for Dru, violent thoughts and intentions – towards humans. Although she can still fight demons and those with demonic blood, it is all but impossible for her to hurt humans.

first person sample: I asked them to stop, once. I was just a little girl. I had a heart beating in my chest and mud on my petticoats and I thought I could shape the world if I just wished hard enough. If wishes were fishes we’d live in the sea. I’d like to swim in a sea like that. I didn’t know that the pixies wouldn’t listen. The pictures aren’t just in my head, they’re part of my head. Filling me up. There’d be nothing left if you took them away, just skin and bones and horrible science.

You had to say lots of prayers to keep the devil away, back in the old days, and that’s what Mama told me I was. A devil. I had his mark on me. His stories sat on my tongue. I thought they were lies, but it didn’t turn to coal and crumble away. That would have spoiled all my dresses.

Nobody prays anymore. Oh, they say the words and they close their eyes and sometimes they even kneel, but they don’t believe. How can they? They fill their heads up with cars and music and lights and glitter and noise. All that wonderful noise. There’s no room for God.

I used to pray to the Lord and ask him to take the pictures away. The pixies were walking beside me all the time, snapping at my heels and snatching at my shadow. I thought He’d save me from them. I thought He wanted me to be good.

I could never be good. The pictures would always come, filling me up with wicked sins and pouring out of my mouth before I remembered that I wasn’t supposed to tell.

The Lord had a plan for me, you see. The Lord has always had a plan for me. I didn’t know that he wanted me to be a wicked thing, not then. I waited until Mama lost herself to the night, and Anne was torn up by the wolves on the doorstep. Then I saw. Oh, I saw.

Do you like lemons? Bitter, they are. They make your tongue tingle, and your fingers are sharp for days afterwards. I used to dream about writing with their juice. Invisible secrets on the wall, until the bricks started to crumble away. You can’t keep secrets for long. The pixies don’t like secrets. They like to share.

Why can’t they share sweetmeats instead? I could bake pies and share them with the neighbours.

Sometimes I think they’ll share me as well. Dividing me up among the stars until every pixie has someone to talk to. I’ll lose all my words and all my bones and all the bits inside me. Even my hair. I don’t think I’d like to be bald.

I can’t ask them to stop, though. Wicked things must always be wicked. If they don’t tell their stories to me, who else will listen? Nobody has room for prayers anymore. Nobody has room for the pixies either.

third person sample: It was raining in Prague. Their suite was bright and golden – just like the pretty little girl that Spike had found for their supper – but the greyness of the skies and bleakness of the sodden city seeped in through the curtains. It was almost enough to choke Drusilla. It filled up her head until she wanted to scream with frustration. The heavens shouldn’t have opened. They were supposed to remain closed to the likes of her. She’d been marked for the devil from the day of her birth and claimed by him forever on the day of her death. When she’d risen from the ground, as white as a ghost and with soil in her hair, she’d stepped forward without ever looking back towards the light that she’d lost.

(“Don’t worry, princess,” Spike had murmured, kissing her bare shoulder as he sprawled out on the bed beside her. “The rain’ll clear up soon and then we can go out and find out who’s worth killing in this city.”)

She was lucky to have her darling deadly boy. They never had any difficulty entertaining themselves, though he’d drifted off to sleep now. She must have tired him out.

With a fond smile at her lover, Drusilla slid out from under the arm that was casually draped over her waist. Spike didn’t stir. He slept like the dead, though he looked terribly alive in moments like this, all tousled blonde hair and sleep softened features. The promise that she’d been drawn to back when he’d been sweet little William was laid out for all to see, though no one else – no one but her – ever really looked for it. He glittered, as effulgent as a star, for her alone.

As naked as the day she’d been born – the first time that she’d been born, not the day that Daddy had breathed fresh life into a broken doll – Drusilla crossed the room. When she walked past their discarded dinner, she left bloody footprints on the carpet. A slightly darker shade of red.

(“Will anyone mourn you?” she’d asked, stroking the girl’s golden curls as she trembled with fear in Spike’s grip. Drusilla’s hands were gentle, but, when she caught her chin and turned the frightened face to her own, her fingers were like a vice. “You’re a pretty thing. Don’t you have a sweetheart? Someone to bring flowers to your grave?”

She twisted her hand. Bones snapped and cracked. The girl fell still and silent. With a smile as sweet as moonlight, Drusilla turned to meet her boy’s beautiful eyes.

“Spike? I want flowers.”

“I’ll get you the finest roses in Prague, pet.”

“Oh, my beautiful boy.” She leaned over the dead girl’s body to capture his lips in a hungry kiss. “Take me to bed?”
)

The sun would be setting soon. She placed a hand on the velvet drapes and felt it dying away beneath her palm. Things made more sense in the dark. Perhaps her head would clear soon?

This wasn’t the Prague that she remembered or the Prague that she wanted, but Drusilla didn’t know why. There was something out there. Something waiting for them. Why were the whispering pixies in her head always silent when she wanted them to speak?

A low moan started to build in her throat, her chest, her silent heart. Drusilla closed her eyes and counted the unseen stars until she was calm again. She didn’t want to wake Spike. When she was ready, she meandered back across the room and curled up next to him, guiding his arm back around her waist. He was cold. Even in his sleep, he pulled her close. She fitted perfectly in his arms and she knew that, even if the voices in her head remained silent, they’d face the secrets in Prague’s shadows together.
